This freely available book provides a strategic viewpoint on artificial intelligence and the process of integrating it into society. After extensive study spanning several decades, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently making its way into mainstream society. AI's versatile nature will revolutionise civilisation in numerous, essential, and unforeseeable ways. Hence, the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) defines AI as a system technology, which is a unique category of technologies that profoundly influence society as a whole. Previous technological advancements encompassed electricity, the internal combustion engine, and the computer. The historical background of these technologies offers valuable insights into the necessary requirements for effectively implementing AI in society. The WRR outlines five essential duties for effectively addressing this process: demystification, contextualization, engagement, regulation, and positioning. Societies may exert significant influence on the integration of AI by demystifying its concept, establishing a functional ecosystem, engaging varied stakeholders, implementing regulatory frameworks, and fostering international collaboration. Together, these activities guide the co-development process between technology and society, with each one representing a distinct approach to protecting public values. Mission AI - The New System Technology was initially released as a consultative paper for the Dutch government. The strategic analysis and recommendations provided are applicable to any government or organisation seeking to adopt 'mission AI' and integrate this cutting-edge technological system into our society.
