The present chapter provides an
overview of the contextual framework of the book. The publication emerged as a
product of a transdisciplinary collaborative research endeavor focused on
addressing issues related to tropical peatlands in Indonesia. This chapter
provides an overview of the emergence of tropical peatlands as a novel
development frontier for plantation expansion, as well as the consequential
ecological degradation leading to fire outbreaks and transboundary smoke
damage. Additionally, it discusses the efforts undertaken by the Indonesian
government and international organizations to conserve and restore tropical
peatlands. The chapter posits that contemporary peatlands have evolved into a
political sphere wherein various stakeholders, such as donors, central
government ministries, local governments, environmental non-governmental
organizations (NGOs), forestry and plantation companies, and numerous local
communities, engage in a complex interplay. This is due to the fact that
peatlands have become a contentious terrain for both plantation development and
environmental conservation efforts. The occurrence of significant conflict of
interests has primarily been observed at the local level, particularly within
villages located in or near peatlands. Limited study has been conducted on the
inter-disciplinary and transdisciplinary aspects of peatlands at the local
level. Hence, the present study has directed its attention towards the
preservation and rehabilitation endeavors of peatlands, with a particular
emphasis on the village-level initiatives, as elucidated inside this
publication.
